For the second year in a row, Mullan Road Elementary School has been recognized as one of America’s Healthiest Schools by the Alliance for a Healthier Generation.
This year, 1,376 schools in 35 states and Washington, DC. received this honor for their work supporting student, staff and family well-being with only four schools in all of Washington state recognized.
“Every school recognized this year demonstrates what’s possible when we prioritize the well-being of students and staff, creating environments where everyone can thrive,” said Traci Causey, CEO of Healthier Generation. “Their commitment to school health best practices is shaping a brighter future for millions of young people.”
Supported by Kaiser Permanente and Kohl’s Cares, Healthier Generation’s annual award program recognizes schools for implementing best practices in nine health-related areas.
Mullan Road was celebrated for efforts in the following six areas:
School Health Services
Nutrition & Food Access
Physical Education & Activity
Health Education
Social-Emotional Health & Learning
Staff Well-Being
“This recognition celebrates the collective efforts of our entire Trailblazer community,” said principal Matt Beal, highlighting the efforts of the counselor, nurse, Nutrition Services staff, teachers and support staff in creating a community where wellness, belonging and joy are part of the everyday experience.
He also commended fifth grade student leaders known as Peacekeepers who support younger students at recess to build friendship and solve problems, as well as the leadership students from neighboring Peperzak Middle School who provide mentorship and support for Trailblazers across grade levels.
“Beyond the school day, we have expanded our Engage in Real Life extracurricular opportunities, providing students with additional ways to participate in athletics, clubs, and enrichment activities like Builders Club. These experiences promote physical activity, positive relationships, student engagement, and a stronger connection to school,” Mr. Beal shared.
At Mullan Road, “The Trailblazer Way” encourages everyone to Be Kind, Be Safe, and Be Your Best Self.
“We know that when students and staff feel safe, connected, supported, and healthy, they are better positioned to learn, grow, and become their best selves,” said Mr. Beal.
