With the right hand she reaches backward, over her shoulder, to draw an arrow from her quiver. Such a pose builds a curve around which the rhythm of the whole figure is composed.

Notes: Original in Lateran Museum, Rome. This is a representative figure of Athena (Minerva), goddess of wisdom and "patron saint" of Athens. According to the myths, she sprang full-grown and full armed from the brow of Zeus (Jupiter or Jove). Observe her tessellated breast plate of goatskin; the aegis, decorated with the head of Medusa; the sphinx upon the helmet; the serpent, which was sacred to her; and the spear she brandished.
