A crossing guard in a yellow vest indicates for a student on a bicycle to show down as they cross with traffic in the background.

With school starting up next week, we joined Spokane Police Department to share a few reminders for safe travel habits when commuting.

Stay alert behind the wheel: “Don’t drive distracted – eyes forward.”

Drivers should keep eyes on the road (not a phone) and be aware of surroundings. Students should look both ways before crossing streets and confirm that vehicles are stopped before proceeding. If crossing guards are present, please follow their directions.

Take a pass on driving fast: “Speeding actually slows you down.”

The consequences of driving too fast aren’t worth getting to your destination just a few minutes earlier, especially if you’re putting yourself and others in danger. Instead of speeding, plan your commute to account for potential slowdowns on your route so you can arrive at school or work on time – maybe you’ll even be early!

Mind the signs: “Slow on yellow and stop on red. If the arm is out, kids are crossing ahead.”

Don’t just know this catchy phrase – use it! Be cautious when school buses are present, especially as students board or leave the bus. Please also be mindful of your school's bus lanes and pick-up/drop-off procedures to keep things running smoothly.

Thank you for your support in keeping our community safe. If you have questions or comments about driving behavior around our schools and students, please reach out at spokaneschools.org/letstalk so we can find solutions together.
