The start of a new school year comes with lots of excitement for all the possibilities ahead, as well as some nervousness over new environments, new challenges, and new relationships.

And a new school year can be an especially hard transition for students and families experiencing a loss of housing, as they navigate the stressors above alongside the challenges of housing insecurity.

Our Homeless Education and Resource Team (HEART) program provides support for students experiencing homelessness, so they can access the learning opportunities needed to fully engage in their education and school community.

HEART often refers students and families to local organizations and businesses that provide support, resources and services. Many of these groups go above and beyond in August and September so students have a strong start for the new school year.

“New clothing is essential for young people making it to school and feeling happy about what they are wearing,” said Sarah Miller, SPS McKinney-Vento liaison.

This list is by no means comprehensive. We know many other community groups, organizations and businesses do so much to support and serve students, especially within their own neighborhoods. We are thankful for all they do for students as they continue to dream and access the opportunities they need to succeed this year.
