Wilson Elementary School principal Mike Syron smiles as he stands next to a river lined with evergreen trees, holding a large salmon under a blue sky.

We appreciate all school administrators for their hard work and dedication to students and staff each and every day. Since October is National Principals Month, we wanted to take a moment to get to know some of our community's newest principals.

Get to know Mike Syron, principal at Wilson Elementary School.

What do students call you?

Students call me Mr. Syron.

Where were you before you became principal at your school?

I grew up in Kooskia, Idaho. I went to the University of Idaho for my secondary education degree. I started teaching at Ferris High School in 1999 and I coached football, girls’ basketball and girls’ tennis. In 2006, I became the Athletic Director at Ferris and was there until 2011.

I received a master’s degree in public administration and my Principal Certification from Eastern Washington University during this time. From 2011-13, I worked at Rogers High School in student services. I became an assistant principal at Riverside High School from 2013-18 before becoming principal at Riverside Middle School for two years. I then served as principal at Evergreen Middle School in the Central Valley School District until 2024. I am so excited to be the principal at Wilson Elementary School this year!

I currently live in Cheney with my wonderful wife Tiffany, and three kids: Jackson (17), Garrett (13), and Jillian (11). We have pigs, goats, horses, cows, dogs, cats and chickens on our little S-5 Ranch!

What are you most excited about for the 2023-24 school year?

I am most excited to learn all about the culture and traditions of Wilson Elementary School. I love being on the playground with the students at recess and in the lunchroom where we are all getting to know each other. We have a veteran staff that loves Wilson and our students and community. I have loved going in and out of classrooms every day to watch our students learn and grow.

What’s a fun fact about you that your school community would be surprised/excited to learn?

I was a river guide for 30 summers! I have guided whitewater and fishing trips on the following rivers: Selway River (by far my favorite), Lochsa River, Middle Fork of the Salmon River, Main Salmon River, Lower Main Salmon River, Snake River, Clark Fork River in Montana, and Lake Creek (south of Denali in the Alaskan bush). If I wasn't a principal, I would like to move to Alaska and operate a fishing lodge on the Kenai River.

Welcome to Wilson, Mr. Syron!
