A girl wearing pink roller skates glides across an elementary school gym. Other students are out of focus behind her.

Riding the skates has been a lifelong hobby of Frances Scott Elementary School fitness and health teacher Kiara Conklin-Davis – she even met her boyfriend Sky at a skate night! To share her passion with students, she started an after-school Roller Skating Club.

With help from volunteers Sky and her mom Karrie – who is also the school nurse at Frances Scott – Ms. Conklin-Davis teaches basic skating and some funky footwork to about 30 students in grades 2nd-5th.

Some students owned skates, but for those who didn’t, Ms. Conklin-Davis collected donated skates along with financial donations to purchase thrifted skates and discounted skates courtesy of Big Five Sporting Goods.

“It’s a great activity where you don’t have to be a part of a team, you can just work on building self-confidence within yourself. And that’s what I want to teach my kids,” she said.

We love to see students having fun, making friends, and learning new skills in unique after-school clubs and activities! Learn more about opportunities for students to get active at Engage IRL.
